Sigiriya Bike Tour

Built in the 5th Century by the infamous King Kasyapa and declared a World Heritage Site in 1982, Sigiriya or The Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress situated in the Matale District. Then a temporary yet stalwart political stronghold, now manages to astonish the world with its artistic and statuesque facets. Though the ruins and the view from the rock is quite breath-taking, your exuberance can be very short lived owing to the general tumult of overenthusiastic visitors. While fellow travellers trudge uphill, get up-close-and-personal with Sigiriya in an atypical manner.

The encircling area of Sigiriya has given way to nature and provides many by-roads to the avid cyclist. Riding through these pathways you can observe the mound in many different angels and appreciate its beauty from lesser known vantage points. As you ride further the tarmac will merge into dirt tracks taking you into the innermost villages and the adjacent farmyards. The majority of these villagers depend on farming and are scrupulous and awfully welcoming.

A dallying early morning ride through the rich foliage will offer solace from the midday sun and a welcoming change from the cities. The quiet and quaint villages, incessant birdsong, unceasing flurries of air acres of farmland, and exultant people are what makes this ride a divine experience. Dip in to legendary Sri Lankan hospitality and experience the placid suburban existence.

Stop by a tea hut to quench your thirst along the way. A black tea, infused with fresh ginger is a great stimulator and a resource of power to keep you paddling till the sunset hours. A tea party in Sri Lanka is never complete without things to nibble on and you could be at a loss choosing between the savoury and the sweet.

Some of these back roads will take you through thick patches of jungle and various canals and waterways which may allow you a glimpse of wildlife or some avian companions. If the ride is too much and you need a little bit of extra encouragement, a support vehicle will follow you with staff members attuned to your every need.

If you know where to look, Sigiriya is much more than a city with a historic monument. It has its own character, appeal and a rare magnetism that will leave you pleasantly bewildered.
