Discover Kandy: Exploring the Sacred Temples of Sri Lanka

rediscovereditor Blog, Featured, Travel 4 min read

Kandy, just 26 kilometers from my hometown, has always been my favorite city in Sri Lanka. Known for its rich culture, historical significance, and scenic beauty, Kandy never ceases to captivate me. Whether it’s visiting the Temple of the Tooth Relic, feeding the tilapia in Kandy Lake, or sipping coffee in a café while watching the monsoon rain pour down, Kandy’s charm is endless.

When I seek a getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I often venture to Kandy’s “Three Temples” – a fascinating collection of sacred sites. These temples, which all belong to the Gampola era, offer a beautiful mix of architectural styles, each telling a unique story.

1. Gadaladeniya Temple: A Blend of South Indian and Local Architecture

Gadaladeniya, or more formally Gadaladeniya Rajamaha Viharaya, is an ancient monastery located 13 kilometers from Kandy, in the city of Diggala. Dating back to the mid-1300s, this temple is believed to have been constructed by a South Indian architect. Its design combines local architecture with South Indian influences, making it one of the most unique temples in the region.

The standout feature of Gadaladeniya Temple is the dragon arch framing the seated Buddha statue. The main stupa, shielded by a gable roof, is supported by four pillars and surrounded by four smaller stupas representing the cardinal directions. The shrine beneath the stupas offers a distinctive structure compared to other temples I’ve visited.

2. Lankathilake Temple: A Masterpiece of Sri Lankan Architecture

Lankathilake Temple, located in Udunuwara, just a half-hour drive from Kandy, is another architectural wonder. The temple’s stone stairways, which I find soothing to walk barefoot on, lead to a breathtaking view that clears my mind. Lankathilake’s design is one of the most sophisticated I have encountered. The devalas (shrines), Bo tree, and the temple itself combine to create an ambiance of spiritual serenity. For anyone looking to refresh both body and mind, this temple is a must-visit.

3. Ambakka Temple: A Wooden Marvel of Craftsmanship

Ambakka Temple is one of the most extraordinary places I’ve visited. Famous for its intricate wood carvings, Ambakka is dedicated to the deity God Kataragama and combines both religious devotion and remarkable craftsmanship. The temple consists of three main sections: the shrine, the dance hall, and the drummer’s hall. What sets Ambakka apart is its use of wood in its entire structure, from the pillars to the roofs, all covered in elaborate carvings.

These carvings feature everything from entangled bulls and elephants to celestial musicians, mythical creatures, and intricate lotus flowers. Every inch of the temple tells a story through these carvings, and I never tire of admiring them. Ambakka Temple is an architectural and artistic marvel, and it truly deserves to be experienced firsthand.
