Galle

Galle, located on Sri Lanka’s sun-kissed southern coast, is a captivating blend of colonial heritage and tropical charm. Wander through the iconic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where cobblestone streets, Dutch-era architecture, and cozy cafés invite exploration. Just beyond the ramparts, discover golden beaches, hidden coves, and vibrant local life. Whether you’re looking for history, surf, or stylish boutique hotels, Galle offers a rich cultural escape that blends old-world elegance with modern coastal living.

Dating back to the 13th century Galle is a port city situated in the south west coast of Sri Lanka. A fortified city brought to glory during the Dutch occupation, Galle today is a central attraction sought by many.

A UNESCO World heritage city, Galle is best explored on a bike or on foot. Age-old churches, light houses, cobblestoned streets, museums and the fort itself are a intermingling of colonial architecture and eastern elegance, which flawlessly weave then and now.

Stylish cafes, chic boutiques, trendy restaurants, galleries, restored hotels and mansions have set an apt ambience in blending old and new. Galle is patronised by many artists that include authors, photographers, designers and poets. Galle Literacy Festival is one of the most anticipated literary events in southeast Asia frequented by literary enthusiasts all over the world.  Sunset walks along the old Dutch city can be a welcoming conversion from the extreme ends of modernism and conventionalism.

Down south is famous for its scenic shorelines. Out of many ‘Unawatuna’ and ‘Thalpe’ shores are admired for their unique beauty. The sunsets at these coasts are a sight to behold. The dusk sky painted with every colour known to humans, palm trees in shadows and the blue-green waters create an exquisite sight turning an ordinary coast in to a magical paradise.

As you walk inland the setting changes drastically. The palms fade away into lush greenery making way to low country tea and cinnamon. The tropical low wetland rainforests bordering these villages are mostly reserves that provide shelter to numerous flora and fauna.

Out of many conservation programmes in Sri Lanka, the sea turtle hatcheries and conservation centres play a pivotal role in maintaining the balance between human activities and nature. A little time and your attention could make this air-breathing reptile’s future much promising.

Galle is a gleeful mix of yesteryears and today. You will be missing out something aesthetic and alluring if you strike off this beautiful city from your list.
